A water heater rarely fails at a convenient time. Progressive's plumbers are on call around the clock across the Triangle, carry the common parts for the brands we install, and stock standard tank and tankless units, so most repairs and many replacements are finished the same day you call (877) 325-0180. Every job comes with flat-rate pricing quoted before the work starts and a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
Repair or replace?
If the tank itself is leaking, replacement is the only fix. For everything else, a repair is usually worth it on a unit under about ten years old: failed heating elements and thermostats, thermocouples and gas valves, pressure relief valves, sediment flushing and pilot or ignition faults. Past that age, with rust in the water or rising fuel bills, a new high-efficiency unit often pays for itself. We give you both numbers and let you decide.
Types of water heaters we install
- Gas water heaters. Fast recovery and low operating cost for most Triangle homes with natural gas or propane.
- Electric water heaters. Simple, long-lived and the right choice where there is no gas line; heat-pump models cut electric use sharply.
- Tankless water heaters. Endless hot water on demand, no standby loss, and a unit the size of a suitcase on the wall.
- Hybrid tankless water heaters. A small buffer tank plus tankless heating, for homes that want on-demand efficiency without flow or pressure drops.
Brands we install and service
We recommend by fit, not by badge, but these are the lines our plumbers trust and keep parts for:
- A.O. Smith: the broadest line of tank, hybrid and high-efficiency units, built for reliability.
- State Water Heaters: durable tank units from the same family as A.O. Smith, proven in hard use.
- Rinnai: compact wall-mounted tankless units with long service lives.
- Noritz: space-saving tankless units for indoor or outdoor installation.
We repair most other brands as well, including units we did not install.
What an installation includes
- Sizing. Household size, fixtures and peak use decide tank capacity or tankless flow rate, so you are not short of hot water or paying to heat water you never use.
- Permit and code. Water heater replacements are permitted work in Wake and Durham counties. We pull the permit and bring venting, gas, expansion tank and pan to current code.
- Installation and haul-away. New unit set, connected and tested; the old one removed.
- Inspection. We meet the inspector and leave you the paperwork.

Water heater questions we answer every day
How long does a water heater last?
Tank water heaters typically last eight to twelve years; tankless units often last fifteen to twenty with annual descaling. Hard water and skipped maintenance shorten both.
Can you replace my water heater the same day?
Usually, yes. We stock common tank and tankless units and our plumbers are on call 24/7. Special sizes or venting changes can add a day.
Should I switch to tankless?
If you run out of hot water, have a large household, or want to reclaim floor space, tankless is worth a look. If your gas line or electrical service is undersized, the install costs more; we check that before quoting.
Do you handle the permit?
Yes. Permits and inspections are part of every Progressive water heater installation.

Joe Oliveira stopped by my home, took time to understand the problem that I was having with the unit, went back and discussed the issue with his team of experts and had a detailed work order sent to me with in a day. … Based on the experience that I have had with Progressive Plumbing, Heating & Air, Electrical, I will HIGHLY recommend them for HVAC install and maintenance.
